Kim Kardashian responds to prosecutor's call for resentencing of Menendez brothers

Kim Kardashian shares her reaction to Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón's recommendation Thursday that Erik and Lyle Menendez be resentenced.

The businesswoman and reality star, who has been open about her support of the brothers, took to her Instagram Story on Thursday afternoon to express her appreciation for Gascón.

“The Menendez brothers have been granted a second chance at life and will wake up tomorrow finally eligible for a parole hearing. You could be released in as little as six months,” Kardashian wrote. “Thank you, George Gascón, for revisiting the Menendez brothers’ case and righting a significant wrong. Your commitment to truth and fairness is commendable. To the brother's family, his friends and the millions of people who loudly supported him: your voices were heard. “The media attention, particularly following Ryan Murphy’s TV show, helped expose the abuses and injustices in her case.”

She continued: “Society's understanding of child abuse has evolved and social media empowers us to question the existing system.” This case highlights the importance of questioning decisions and seeking the truth, too if guilt is not questioned.”

During a news conference Thursday, Gascón said his office would request a reexamination of the case of the brothers who fatally shot their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez in 1989. They served 34 years in prison after exhausting all appeals in 2005.

The recommendation that the brothers be resentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole will be considered by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge. A parole board then decides whether they should be released.

Cooper Koch, who portrayed Erik in Ryan Murphy's Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendezalso praised Gascón for his recommendation. The district attorney announced that the brother's case was being reviewed for possible resentencing just days after the hit Netflix series premiered last month.

“I am overwhelmed with gratitude and hope for the progress we have seen today,” Koch wrote in a statement The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday. “Gascón’s recommendation created a new sense of possibility that Lyle and Erik could finally be released after decades behind bars.”

He continued: “But this journey is not over yet. There are still crucial steps ahead: the judge must approve the resentencing, and in this case the parole board must recognize the time served as appropriate for the crime. Our voices, our unwavering support, remain vital – not only for the brothers' release, but also for every struggling victim of sexual abuse to be heard. I hope to see Erik and Lyle soon. Free from all of this.”

Murphy has not yet commented on Gascón's recommendation, but he has said it before THR that he believes the Menendez brothers “probably deserve their time in court, at least with some of this new evidence.” And then the courts will have to decide. I hope they get justice.”

Among the new evidence presented to the district attorney was a letter written by Erik that his lawyers say corroborates allegations that he was sexually abused by his father.
