Aston Villa boss Unai Emery says the club's first Champions League home game against Bayern Munich will be a “special” occasion.

Villa opened their season with a 3-0 away win at Young Boys in Switzerland and played their first home game in Europe's elite competition since 1983.

German giants Bayern travel to Villa Park for a repeat of the 1982 European Cup final, which Villa famously won.

“We are motivated and really looking forward to playing with our fans at Villa Park. It’s a very special game for everyone,” Emery said at a press conference.

“We are very motivated to return to Europe last year as Aston Villa have not played Bayern Munich for 42 years.”

Emery, who has managed 188 games in European football, beat Bayern in the Champions League as coach of Paris St-Germain and Villarreal.

He said his team were the underdogs against the six-time European Cup winners but urged his players to “keep up” and “do their best”.

“I think Europe is something very, very important and very, very difficult. That is the challenge we face now,” Emery added.

“Of course it’s against one of the best teams in the world. They are the favorites, much bigger favorites than us.”
