Although it was initially thought to be a minor injury, manager Mikel Arteta decided to rest him as a precautionary measure and hopes that Raya will be fit for Arsenal's upcoming match against Leicester on Saturday.

Before confirming his injury, Arteta had admitted that Raya's participation in the game against Bolton was doubtful. “Let's see how they are today and we will try to make a decision when it is possible,” Arteta said when speaking about the goalkeeper's availability.

With Raya unavailable, Arsenal faced a potential goal crisis. Neto, on loan in the summer, was cup-bound having already played in the League Cup for Bournemouth. Meanwhile, the club's new signing Lucas Nygaard is still recovering from a broken thumb and is not yet ready to play.

This situation prompted Arteta to name 16-year-old Jack Porter as the starting goalkeeper. Porter, an England U17 international who has trained with Arsenal's first team, has made few appearances for the club's U18 and U21 sides but was seen as the most viable option under the circumstances. He started on the bench for the Champions League match against Atalanta and travelled to the games against Tottenham and Manchester City as a stand-in goalkeeper.

Arsenal's other young goalkeepers, 18-year-old Tommy Setford and Alexei Rojas, were also unavailable as Setford is still recovering from injury. Another possibility was Brian Okonkwo, the younger brother of former Gunner Arthur Okonkwo, who was on the bench for the U21s but could have been called up if needed.

Rojas was named as reserve goalkeeper on the bench.
