The Los Angeles Lakers are trending in the wrong direction.

Los Angeles fell to 4-4 overall and 1-4 in its last five games with its 131-114 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday at FedExForum. Memphis is 5-4 after its third win of the quarterfinals and remained largely content in this game against a Lakers team that was without Anthony Davis (heel) and Rui Hachimura (illness).

Ja Morant contributed to the win with 20 points, five assists and four rebounds, although he left the second half with a right hamstring injury and did not return with his game well under control.

When it comes to the purple and gold, LeBron James was an ageless wonder, filling the stat sheet with 39 points, seven rebounds and six assists on 15 of 24 shooting from the field and 6 of 11 shooting from beyond the arc. However, that wasn't nearly enough, as the rest of the guests managed a total of 9 out of 37 points from three-point range and struggled to provide any meaningful help.

James can at least take solace in knowing that his performance was well received on social media:

It appears that talk of LeBron James' death has been greatly exaggerated.

With Davis and Hachimura sidelined, James wasted no time in taking control of the offense, scoring 22 points in the first half alone.

He even drew a “too small” celebration from Morant after he shot over the guard, although the Grizzlies star responded with a basket of his own and received a technical foul for shoving James.

It was more of the same for the 39-year-old after the break as he struck from beyond the arc and overwhelmed Memphis' wings on the drive to the basket.

Still, the Lakers trailed by double digits for much of the second half, and the supporting cast remained quiet for much of the second half. Only D'Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves reached double figures heading into fourth of that group, and even they struggled with efficiency.

However, it wasn't all good news for the Grizzlies like Morant went to went to the locker room with a thigh injury after being undercut during a lob attempt. There was no need to bring him back and risk further injury as the home team quickly put the game away in the fourth quarter.

Los Angeles will look to bounce back on Friday when it hosts the Philadelphia 76ers.
