Lions DE Marcus Davenport could miss the rest of the season due to an elbow injury

Unfortunately, the Detroit Lions' long injury list from Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals was not complete. There was one more injury, and it could be the worst of all. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, defensive end Marcus Davenport suffered an elbow injury that could cause him to miss the rest of the 2024 season.

“#Lions pass rusher Marcus Davenport suffered what appears to be a serious and significant elbow injury in Sunday's game, sources say,” Rapoport tweeted Monday. “Davenport, who has been wearing a brace and attempting to return, could be out for the remainder of the season. He is currently undergoing additional testing.”

This would be a major blow to Detroit's improved defense. Although Davenport has only two tackles and 0.5 sacks in two games with the Lions, he has been instrumental in shrinking the quarterback and giving others the opportunity to get to the quarterback.

Detroit also lost two more players from its five-man defensive line on Sunday. SAM linebacker Derrick Barnes and defensive tackle Alim McNeill were out for the first half of the game, and while coach Dan Campbell believed Sunday night would not be season-ending for either of them, it sounds like both will be out.

“I can't say they won't be long-term, but I don't think we have to worry about them ending the season,” Campbell said. “But we'll know a lot more about those things tomorrow when we can go home and check it out.”

This is another major blow to Davenport's career. The former first-round pick has shown signs of being a starter, but if these reports are accurate, it will be the second straight season where he's out for the majority of the year due to injury. In fact, he's only played more than 13 games in a season once in his entire career.

In the offseason, the Lions signed Davenport to a one-year, $6.5 million contract, with a portion of the contract tied to game bonuses.
