North Carolina has 16 electoral votes up for grabs.

Democrats have won North Carolina only twice in the last 13 presidential elections, most recently in 2008 under former President Barack Obama. Former President Donald Trump won the state by about three points in 2016 and by just over one point in 2020. But Democrats have set their sights on the state again this year, especially after Vice President Kamala Harris took the nomination.

Although the state still has a large rural population, the demographics have changed rapidly in recent years, with more college-educated white voters moving to areas around Raleigh. And the state has a significant black population that Harris wants to capitalize on.

Just weeks before the election, parts of western North Carolina were devastated by Hurricane Helene. Some areas, including some polling places, were completely washed away, while misinformation and disinformation about elections and storm response are widespread. Still, the affected region saw record early voting turnout, with 59 percent of registered voters there voting in some way before Election Day.
