It's that time of year again when college football fans are hopeful and wondering if their favorite team can secure a spot in the College Football Playoff. This year, however, there are even more than usual. With the expanded format comes tons of new schools and fan bases eager to find out where they stand in the eyes of the selection committee.

Well, that's exactly what we learned. Oregon, Georgia, Miami and BYU received the top four spots and expected first-round byes. While bubble teams like Alabama, Tennessee and Indiana all received projected playoff bids.

Of course, this is all hypothetical. There is still plenty of time for teams to make a name for themselves or completely fall apart. Who knows? At the end of the season, perhaps some of the lower-ranked teams, such as undefeated Army or highly underrated Ole Miss, could break into the Top 12.

Here are the first official 2024 CFP rankings.

Each of the four quarterfinal games and both semifinal games are played in the current New Year's Six Bowls. These bowls include Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, Cotton and Peach bowls. As with the four-team playoffs, these bowls alternate between hosting semifinal and quarterfinal games each year.

In 2024, the quarterfinal bowl games will be the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl. The semifinal bowl games will be the Cotton and Orange Bowls.

Each of the top four spots will be awarded to the highest-ranked conference champion. They all also receive a bye for the first round.

The fifth seed conference champion is also guaranteed a spot in the CFP, but is not guaranteed the No. 5 seed. Essentially, the 5th through 12th seeds are the top-ranked non-conference champions, seeded based on their final rankings.
