For the second time in two years, Liga MX's Club America will face the Crew at Lower.com Field, and this time there's a trophy at stake.

The Crew and Club America will battle it out tonight for the Campeones Cup, a title clash between last season's MLS Cup winner and the Liga MX winner. Last year, when the two clubs met in Columbus, it was the group stage of the Leagues Cup tournament.

With both teams already assured of a place in the knockout rounds of the League Cup, the Crew and Club America vied for the top spot in their group. Columbus won 4-1 thanks to two goals from striker Cucho Hernandez, who is expecting an exciting match tonight.

“It will be an interesting final,” he said. “Of course it will be difficult because they have a lot of good players. The final is played differently. … We know this feeling, how we have to play the final.”

The Crew was able to keep Club America scoreless in the first half, although they allowed their opponent a few goals in the first half:

  • Shots: Crew (3), Club America (6)
  • Shots on goal: Crew (1), Club America (2)
  • Fouls: Crew (9), Club America (4)

After a long pass from striker Cucho Hernandez, striker Diego Rossi received the ball in front of Club America's goal and was able to attempt a header. Rossi's shot went high and to the right, but goalkeeper Luis Malagon cleared the ball away from the goal.

The Crew were awarded a corner kick when it was ruled that Club American had last touched the ball after midfielder Max Arfsten's shot attempt. Striker Diego Rossi took the corner kick for Columbus and striker Cucho Hernandez was able to find the ball in the air for a header attempt.

Hernandez's header bounced in front of Club America's goal, but was too powerful and went just a few centimeters over the bar.

Midfielder Sean Zawadzki received a yellow card for a foul on Club America striker Alejandro Zendejas. Zawadzki committed the yellow card violation during an attempted tackle.

Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte easily saved his first shot of the game against Club America, catching a shot from Club America striker Brian Rodriguez that went straight to Schulte in the center of the goal.

After nearly two minutes of medical attention following the Crew's corner kick, midfielder Sean Zawadzki was able to return to the game for Columbus. While Zawadzki was being treated for an apparent abdominal injury, the Crew was missing a player on the field.

On the first corner kick of the Campeones Cup, Crew striker Diego Rossi took the attempt and sent the ball into the Club America penalty area. After Club America's shot was cleared from the box, Crew midfielder Sean Zawadzki went down holding his stomach and required medical attention.
