Live updates: Harris City Hall response and analysis

Vice President Kamala Harris attends a CNN Presidential Town Hall moderated by CNN's Anderson Cooper in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, on October 23.

Vice President Kamala Harris repeatedly argued in a CNN town hall Wednesday night that Republican rival Donald Trump is “unstable” and “unfit.”

The Democratic nominee's message in the 2024 presidential race in recent weeks has clearly been focused on warning Americans — particularly undecided independents and moderate Republicans — that Trump poses a threat to the nation's core principles.

Here are some key takeaways:

Yes, Harris thinks Trump is a fascist: Harris was asked Wednesday evening whether she thinks Trump is a fascist.

Harris pointed to senior military leaders who served under Trump as saying the former president was a fascist – including former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley and Trump's former White House chief of staff, retired Marine Gen. John Kelly

Harris promises “a new generation of leaders”: Along the way, Harris faced repeated questions about how — and to what extent — she would deviate politically from President Joe Biden. Mostly she brushed them off.

On Wednesday evening, however, Harris appeared more comfortable with the proposal and argued that change would follow if she were elected.

After ticking off some major policy plans, such as Medicare taking over home health care for the elderly, Harris returned to what she called a “new approach.”

Border security and migration are a sensitive issue: Both CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and viewers pressed the vice president on border security.

She was asked about the record number of illegal border crossings during the Biden administration, despite multiple executive orders. That flow only tapered off after a major executive action earlier this year, Cooper noted, questioning why Biden and Harris hadn't taken action sooner.

Harris argued that the Biden administration and she personally believe that executive actions are only short-term solutions and that a long-term solution can only be achieved through a bipartisan agreement in Congress. She emphasized the need for a comprehensive, bipartisan border security bill.
