Man City v Watford player ratings: Phil Foden drops rare stinker but Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish shine as Cityzens prevail in Carabao Cup

The Premier League champions looked confident for most of the time, but experienced a shaky end against the Championship team

Manchester City survived a late scare to beat Watford 2-1 and move into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. The English champions had a two-goal half-time lead thanks to goals from Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes and looked set to see the game through comfortably, but Tom Ince popped up with a beautiful last-minute goal.

The likes of Erling Haaland, Rodri, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva and Ederson were all missing, with youngsters Nico O'Reilly, James McAtee and Kaden Braithwaite starting, but City still dominated the game in the early stages. They didn't have to work hard to take the early lead, however, as Watford gave them one. Ryan Porteous's weak back pass to goalkeeper Jon Bond was intercepted by 21-year-old McAtee and found Jack Grealish, who passed across to Doku, who slotted home a beautiful shot from inside the box.

The Championship side thought they had equalised later in the half when a strong run from Kwadwo Baah ended with his shot beating Stefan Ortega, but he was instead penalised for forcing 16-year-old Braithwaite off the ball.

City continued to have possession for almost three quarters of the game but created few real chances before Rico Lewis broke through the middle and played a pass to Nunes, who got well positioned and slotted the ball home from 16 yards.

The home side continued to create chances with their immense firepower but just couldn't find the net as Phil Foden slowed his team down and couldn't produce anything. Watford, on the other hand, continued to press but didn't find the net until the 86th minute when Ince fired the ball past Ortega and into the net to set up a nerve-wracking finish.
