Man City vs Fulham player ratings: Erling Haaland, where have you been?! The mighty Mateo Kovacic makes it when the Norwegian misfires and Jack Grealish goes missing

The hosts kept the pressure on Liverpool at the top of the Premier League with a hard-fought 3-2 win, thanks largely to their Croatian midfielder

Manchester City recovered from a goal deficit against Fulham as two goals from Mateo Kovacic and one from Jeremy Doku ensured Pep Guardiola's side reduced the gap at the top to just a single point.

City were given early warning of Fulham's threat when Adama Traore got clear one-on-one, but Ederson was denied. But Marco Silva's side took a surprise lead in the 26th minute – Alex Iwobi found Raul Jimenez in the penalty area before the striker fired an exquisite backheel shot into the six-yard box that Andreas Pereira pounced to score.

The visitors should have made it 2-0 shortly afterwards when they took the lead with three players against two, but Traore fired his shot over the bar from close range. And City made their opponents pay as Kovacic turned the game on its head with two goals either side of half-time. The Croatian midfielder shot a loose ball into the net after a corner in the 32nd minute and added a second shortly after the restart with a beautiful finish past Bernd Leno.

Fulham pushed for an equalizer but their efforts faltered when Doku sealed victory with a brilliant shot into the top corner in the 82nd minute. Rodrigo Muniz gave the Londoners a glimmer of hope late on but they failed to score a third goal.

This wasn't a divine performance from City – Traore was again guilty of missing a one-on-one in the second half – but they did enough to secure all three points as they headed into the international break.
