Melania Trump reveals her abortion rights stance in new memoir: report

Melania Trump, the wife of former President Donald Trump, criticizes restrictions on reproductive rights, including restrictions on abortion, in her new memoir “Melania,” according to a new report.

“Why should anyone other than the woman have the power to decide what she does with her own body? “A woman’s fundamental right to individual freedom and her own life gives her the power to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes,” Melania Trump writes in her upcoming book, according to a report in the Guardian on Wednesday.

In a position at odds with much of the Republican Party, Melania Trump reportedly argues that the decision to terminate a pregnancy should be a decision between the woman and her doctor, calling it “common sense.”

“It is imperative to ensure that women have the autonomy to decide their preference for children based on their own beliefs, free from any intervention or pressure from the government,” she reportedly writes in the memoir, which will be published next week should be.

“Restricting a woman’s right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. “I have carried this belief with me throughout my adult life,” she reportedly says in the pages of “Melania.”

Purported excerpts from Melania Trump's upcoming book were published by the Guardian on Wednesday but have not been independently verified by ABC News. A spokesperson for Melania Trump and the Trump campaign did not respond to requests for comment from ABC News.

According to the excerpts, Melania Trump also addresses late-term abortions.

“It is important to note that historically, most abortions in later stages of pregnancy were the result of serious fetal abnormalities that would likely have resulted in death or stillbirth of the child. Maybe even the mother's death. These cases were extremely rare and typically occurred after several consultations between the woman and her doctor. “Here too, common sense is important,” she writes.

These comments stand in stark contrast to the narrative promoted by Donald Trump on the issue, falsely claiming that Democrats support “post-birth” abortion. Infanticide is illegal in all 50 states.

According to the report, Melania Trump continues to ask for compassion for women who choose to have an abortion. She goes into detail about the difficulties that come with this decision and emphasizes the importance of “knowledge, security and comfort” for the next generation.

“When faced with an unexpected pregnancy, young women often experience feelings of isolation and significant stress. Like most Americans, I support requiring teens to obtain parental consent before having an abortion. I realize this may not always be possible.” “Our next generation must be provided with knowledge, security and comfort, and the cultural stigma associated with abortion must be eliminated,” the former first lady reportedly wrote.

Melania Trump's alleged comments come as husband Donald Trump at times stumbled during the campaign when answering complex questions about his position on abortion rights and what reproductive care he would or would not protect. After playing a key role in Roe v. Wade, the former president has advocated for certain abortion exceptions and said he would not sign a federal abortion ban.

At campaign rallies, Trump has praised his abortion policies and described himself as “the most pro-life president in American history.” He also celebrated the appointment of three U.S. Supreme Court justices who helped overturn Roe vs. Wade.

As Sen. JD Vance and Gov. Tim Walz argued over Trump's policies on reproductive rights during Tuesday night's vice presidential debate, the former president reiterated his position in his social media post that the abortion decision is where people want it to be – at the states According to the media platform, he would “under no circumstances support and would even veto” a federal abortion ban.

Abortion remains a top issue for voters – particularly women – in the upcoming election. Both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are working to engage with voters on the issue in what is expected to be a close contest in November.

According to the Guardian, Melania Trump, herself an immigrant, also addresses immigration in her book. But she writes that she likes to keep “occasional political disagreements” secret.

Donald Trump recently promoted his wife's book at his rally in Uniondale, New York, although he suggested he hadn't actually read it.

“First Lady, people love our First Lady out there. Go out and get your book,” Trump said to cheers. “She just wrote a book. I hope she said good things about… She just wrote a book called 'Melania.'” Go out and buy it. And if she says bad things about me, I’ll call you all and say, don’t buy it.”
