Michigan State Spartans football at Michigan Wolverines

Michigan State Spartans football at Michigan Wolverines

Angelique S. Chengelis, John Niyo, Tony Paul and Bob Wojnowski of The Detroit News predict the outcome of Saturday's Michigan State-Michigan game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor (7:30 p.m., Big Ten Network/760, 950).

Angelique S. Chengelis: There's too much up in the air about Michigan's quarterback/passing/turnover situation to believe the Wolverines have been able to clean it up since last weekend's loss at Illinois. Yes, it's a big rivalry game and that should be enough motivation for the Wolverines. But it's also a big rivalry game for Michigan State, and the Spartans have shown improvement of late. The win over Iowa had to be a huge confidence boost. Losses of possession have plagued both teams this season, and whoever wins this aspect of the game comes out on top. Pick: Michigan State, 20-17

John Niyo: If this game is decided locally, Michigan will still be in good shape on a cold night at home. But only if the playmaking makes more sense than last week in Illinois and the quarterback play isn't a disaster. Those seem like big challenges, though, which is why the Wolverines are ripe for an upset here. Michigan State has greater talent at the quarterback position and better playmakers at the receiver position. I'm not convinced that what we saw from the Spartans' offensive line against Iowa will show up against a much better front on Saturday, which will put even more pressure on Aidan Chiles to make big plays in the passing game this game win. But that's a formula that's worked for the Spartans in the past, and Chiles is also capable of extending — and making — plays with his scrambling ability. If he does it enough, Michigan's slide will continue. Pick: Michigan State, 24-20

Tony Paul: Michigan has won two straight in the series comfortably, but these are not the same Wolverines. These aren't the same Spartans either, as they put in a tough performance last week in a win over Iowa. They say Vegas knows everything, but I'm sorry, I just don't buy Michigan's opening line for a touchdown. Michigan doesn't have a passing game. That will allow Michigan State to sell out even more against the run, just like it did last week against Iowa, which had no success on that front outside of one game. Pick: Michigan State, 24-13

Bob Wojnowski: The Spartans have steadily improved while the Wolverines have steadily regressed, making this almost a mistake. Since winning the national title, including a 49-0 victory in East Lansing, Michigan has lost its bearings – as well as losing a lot of players and a lot of staff. As first-year coaches battle a 4-3 record, the pressure is on Sherrone Moore to restore confidence. Jonathan Smith isn't flashy or brash, but he starts to teach the basics. If Aidan Chiles cuts down on turnovers, the Spartans will have a huge advantage at quarterback, where UM will likely give Jack Tuttle another chance. This battle will be fought primarily on the ground, and the Wolverines will need to restore their strength with Kalel Mullings. MSU stepped up its running game against Iowa, rushing for 212 yards behind an improving offensive line. The Wolverines should still have the superior defense, but it only matters if their quarterback can convert third downs and control the clock. This could get sloppy and the team that forces the last turnover wins. Pick: Michigan, 23-20
