Musk says Americans will face “difficulties” if Trump wins

UPDATE (Oct 30, 2024, 9:36 a.m.) This post has been updated to include the following: Elon Musk's post on X On Tuesday, he confirmed that he expects the economy to collapse if Donald Trump is elected and follows through with his plan.

Elon Musk has a new message for Americans about what to expect from a possible second Donald Trump presidency: suffering.

As Rolling Stone reports, Musk, who Trump has vowed will oversee the “efficiency” of government agencies if elected president, said during a virtual town hall on Friday that Americans must endure “temporary hardship,” if Trump wins.

As Rolling Stone reported:

Elon Musk, the world's richest man, said that if Donald Trump wins and gives him a role in government, Americans will face “difficulties” from efforts to tackle the national debt. He made the comments in a virtual town hall on his website “Most importantly, we reduce spending to live within our means,” he said, adding that these efforts “will create some temporary hardships but will ensure long-term prosperity.”

How long will this hardship last? As long as Musk claims this is apparently necessary. And he further suggested that his plans could provoke strong backlash. According to Rolling Stone:

Musk later said he would “balance the budget immediately,” adding, “Obviously a lot of people who are taking advantage of the government are going to be upset about this.” I'll probably need a lot of security, but it has to be done. And if it doesn’t happen, we’ll just go bankrupt.”

There is no evidence that the United States is in danger of “going bankrupt.” But other than that, it's scary that it's him already deeply paranoid about strict austerity measures that he wasn't even allowed to implement. If a plan is so extreme that the uber-wealthy creator thinks of it and plans ways to protect himself from public unrest, we can expect it to be incredibly unpopular. The whole “you have to suffer for your country” thing certainly smacks of authoritarian propaganda. And I think we can all be sure that Musk – a multi-billionaire who has already benefited greatly from government investments – will face no real hardship if his plan is ever implemented.

At Trump's rally in New York over the weekend, Musk said he believed he could cut about 30% of the federal budget.

Musk reiterated his belief on Tuesday that the economy will suffer if Trump is elected and implements his political plans. Responding to an

For the record, this plan would align with the cuts made by the far-right, pro-Trump Argentine President Javier Milei, who has developed a cult following in today's Republican Party. And if this is Musk's model, Americans have a lot to worry about.

These measures have contributed to Argentina's poverty rate rising to over 50% in the first six months of Milei's presidency. The harshness that Musk predicts actually sounds pretty harsh. With Trump repeatedly praising the Golden Age and Musk preparing Americans for “hardship” if MAGA takes back the White House, it seems pretty obvious that a vote for Trump is a vote for it extreme Wealth inequality and all the suffering that comes with it.
