Martha Stewart may have built a media empire and become the first female self-made billionaire in American history, but a new documentary proves that people are still hungry for answers about her marriage and divorce, which was finalized more than 30 years ago .

Stewart, 83, opened her personal archive of diary entries and letters to tell the rich story of her life, the likes of which many have never seen or heard before, in a new Netflix documentary of the same name.

“Martha’s” revelations have led to a flurry of trending internet research surrounding her marriage and divorce, her wealth, her prison stay and her family.

Stewart has led an exceptionally robust life, including stints as a former Wall Street stockbroker, making a name for herself as an acclaimed author and Emmy Award-winning television host, and seemingly building an omni-media brand solely on her personal presence that stretches across generations and goes beyond cultural changes.

Martha Stewart talks about the breakdown of her marriage

Although she built a billion-dollar brand and published 92 books in the years following her 1990 divorce from Andy Stewart, fans of the media maven are naturally curious about the hot-button topic of her marriage, which is raised again in the Netflix documentary Light came.

Stewart revealed that she and her ex-husband, a publisher, had extramarital affairs during their marriage from 1961 to 1990.

While tracing the course of their relationship, Stewart said in the documentary, “He wasn't happy at home… I don't know how many girlfriends he had during that time, but I think there were a few.”

She admitted to also having a “very brief affair with a very attractive Irish man” while living in New York City with her then-husband, but said it was her husband who pushed for a divorce after his relationship with one of her ex-wife had caused a stir. Assistants.

During this period of his life, Stewart also had a daughter, Alexis Stewart, born in 1965.

“After Andy left, I really got lost in work and ideas for the future, and luckily I had them,” she said in the film. “I could have just been a miserable former housewife, but I didn't let that happen to me and I'm so glad I didn't.”

Martha Stewart criticizes the results of the documentary

Following the film's Netflix debut, Stewart spoke about director RJ Cutler in an interview with The New York Times.

“RJ had complete access, and he really used very little,” she said, referring to Cutler’s access to her archives. “It was just shocking.”

The Times reported that Stewart spent nearly 30 “uninterrupted minutes” criticizing the Oscar-nominated filmmaker during the interview.

According to the medium, Stewart said she believed Cutler focused too much in the documentary on her five-month prison sentence in 2004 for obstruction of justice and lying to federal investigators in connection with an insider trading case.

“It wasn't that important. The trial and actual imprisonment lasted less than two years of an 83-year-old life. To be honest, I thought of it as a vacation,” Stewart told the newspaper.

In a statement to the Times, Cutler said: “I am truly proud of this film and admire Martha's courage in entrusting me with the production. I’m not surprised it’s difficult for them to see aspects of it.”
