Newcastle United 2-0 Chelsea: Alexander Isak scores in the hosts' impressive win

Newcastle United moved past Chelsea to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

A goal from Alexander Isak and shortly afterwards an own goal from Axel Disasi were enough to avenge Sunday's 2-1 defeat against the same opponents in the Premier League.

The game started at a frantic pace as Newcastle's Joelinton hit the post on one side before Renato Veiga's shot on the other side was deflected narrowly wide.

Swedish striker Isak, who had scored just twice this season, opened the scoring from close range in the 23rd minute after Sandro Tonali intercepted a free pass just outside the penalty area.

The hosts doubled their lead three minutes later when Joe Willock fired in a cross from Isak and Chelsea defender Disasi fired the ball into his own net.

Enzo Maresca's side struggled to cope with Newcastle's pressing and were fortunate to go into the half-time break just two goals behind.

Midway through the second half, Sean Longstaff thought he had headed a third ball into the goal, but the linesman's flag ruled it offside.

Chelsea had more possession after the break but were frustrated when Joao Felix missed the target in a one-on-one with Nick Pope.

Substitute Noni Madueke looked decent but coach Maresca, who left out Nicolas Jackson, also decided against bringing key player Cole Palmer off the bench.

Newcastle substitute William Osula came agonizingly close to a third goal but his low shot hit the base of the post eight minutes from time.

Newcastle have taken just 12 points from their first nine Premier League games this season, but the crowd at St James' Park were grateful after the impressive performance.

The 2022-23 Carabao Cup runners-up are aiming to win a major domestic trophy for the first time since winning the FA Cup in 1955.

Newcastle will face Brentford in the quarter-finals at St James' Park. The duel will take place in the week commencing December 16th.
