One dead after shooting at youth football game in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — Colorado Springs Police confirmed they are actively responding to reports of a shooting at Atlas Prep School.

KRDO13 asked CSPD if anyone was injured in the incident or if a suspect had been identified. A spokesperson for the Colorado Springs Police Department said they cannot answer those questions at this time.

UPDATE at 4:47 p.m.:

Sergeant Rebecca Smith of the Colorado Springs Police Department told KRDO13 that the suspect in the shooting has not been arrested.

The death of a 29-year-old man has been confirmed. CSPD reports no other injuries.

Colorado Springs police have closed a section of South Murray Boulevard. from Merchants Ct. to Center Park Dr. as they continue their investigation.

CSPD asks the public to avoid the area.

UPDATE at 4:10 p.m.:

Atlas Schools CEO Brittney Stroh released a statement on Facebook. The statement said: “A fight occurred, resulting in the death of one person.” That fight occurred during a sports game hosted by an outside group that rented the field from the school. An Atlas Schools spokesman said the field was leased to Pop Warner, a youth soccer league.

A witness at the scene tells KRDO13 that a youth soccer game was taking place when the shooting broke out.

No Atlas students were affected by the incident.

Dear Atlas families,

On the weekends, Atlas rents out our sports fields and facilities to external groups.

Today there was a fight at one of these games organized by an outside group that left one person dead. Although this took place on Atlas grounds, neither Atlas nor its students were involved or affected. Our condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this tragedy.

Colorado Springs Police are responding to this incident. This is an ongoing investigation. We will update here when we have more information about our Atlas families.
