Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Holden Trent dies aged 25

Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Holden Trent died Saturday, the team announced.

He was 25.

A cause of death was not given.

According to the Delaware County Daily Times, Trent had been in the intensive care unit since Thursday.

“The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking death of Holden Trent,” the club wrote in a statement. “Although he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, above all he was a devoted son, brother, fiancé and teammate who made those around him better.

Holden Trent had been in intensive care since Thursday.

“He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication and perseverance and we will miss him deeply. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, fiancé and friends.”

Trent is a native of Greensboro, North Carolina and played college soccer at West Virginia and High Point.

The Union selected Trent 28th overall in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft.

He appeared in six games for MLS NEXT Pro affiliate Philadelphia Union II.

The Trent family released a statement on their personal Instagram following his death.

“We would like to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Holden passed away this afternoon surrounded by his family and friends,” the post reads. “Details of the services and celebration of life will follow shortly. Our family is deeply touched to see and experience the love you all have for Holden.”
