Pittsburgh Steelers could change the QB depth chart compared to the Cowboys

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers will face the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5 behind Justin Fields at quarterback. After a historic away performance in Indianapolis, the Black and Gold are sticking with their younger option as Russell Wilson returns from a calf injury.

But the feeling is different this week than in previous weeks. While it doesn't appear Wilson will return as a starter and, barring an injury, won't start the season all year, he could move up the rankings in Week 5.

Ray Fittiapoldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes an insider believes Wilson will be active and listed as a backup behind Fields, rather than being listed as inactive and only serving as an emergency quarterback for the Steelers. This would be the first time Wilson has been technically active for a game all season.

“That's the feeling I have right now, I think,” Fittipaldo said on 93.7 The Fan. “There have been incremental steps in this process the whole time, and that's another box to check off.”

Wilson was asked if he was healthy enough to be active and was the No. 2 pick this week and expressed that he was doing whatever it took to help the team and Fields against the Cowboys.

“I think the first thing I need to do is just make sure I'm really physically ready to be ready in some way every week. That's just my mentality, just making sure that if something were to happen, ready, you know, and help us win, that's always the case, to help us win,” Wilson said. “Justin did a great job. Our team did that too, and our boys fought. That’s why I’m confident.”

Kyle Allen would then fall back to the third quarterback, who would likely be inactive and called the emergency option.

The Steelers have not named Fields the long-term starter for this team, but head coach Mike Tomlin has indicated there is a chance Fields continues to play well.

“There’s potential for it, but we’re not there yet where I’m standing here today,” Tomlin said.

Fields has thrown for 830 yards and three touchdowns this season while also rushing for 145 yards and three scores. He had one interception and one fumble in four games and led the Steelers to a 3-1 record.
