Poor offense, lots of penalties in defeat

Poor offense, lots of penalties in defeat

WEST LAFAYETTE − Too many penalties.

Too little attack.

Too bad.

Nebraska benefited from a road trip to West Lafayette to play a Purdue football team whose homecoming was less than celebratory, culminating in a third straight loss.

It took Nebraska almost three full quarters to score, but when the Huskers did, they showered a poor Boilermakers team with a 28-10 victory.

Purdue grades vs. Nebraska: Killer penalties, invisible offense in loss to the Huskers

Where is Purdue football’s offense?

Enough with improved weapons. Injuries have meant some haven't been able to play on the field, but you can't sell guys with the depth you need and have no answer if a few playmakers aren't in the lineup.

Purdue has scored 10 points in its last two home games. Seven of them suffered a one-sided defeat when the game was out of reach.

It's time to ask why the Boilermakers are regressing in terms of offensive improvement.

The total offensive yardage performance on Saturday? Just 224 yards, and that number is increased by a meaningless touchdown drive at the end.

Purdue penalties are piling up

Thirteen penalties for 165 yards.

Purdue flirted with program recordings for both. But those previous penalty points, 16 penalties against Indiana in 1953 and 171 penalty yards against Northwestern in 1969, were victories.

Purdue couldn't win on Saturday with the abundance of penalties.

Now the Boilermakers travel to Wisconsin to face a team they haven't beaten since 2003.

Purdue fans are leaving early

When Purdue punted with just over nine minutes left, the Boilermakers trailed 14-3.

At this point, fans had seen enough. Many in gold and black emerged from the gates and the game ended with Nebraska fans mostly remaining and empty seats around the field.
