Top line

The series premiere of “The Golden Bachelorette,” the latest installment in the Bachelor franchise, aired last week to 2.8 million live viewers, Nielsen data shows, making it the fifth-worst season premiere among ABC’s “The Golden Bachelor,” “The Bachelor,” “The Bachelorette” and “Bachelor In Paradise.”

Key data

“The Golden Bachelorette” aired last Wednesday at 8 p.m. on ABC and reached 2,814,000 live viewers, making it the 21st most-watched show of the week after falling behind other reality shows such as “Dancing With The Stars,” “America's Got Talent,” “Survivor” and “Big Brother.”

The premiere was one of the least-watched season openers of all time in the “Bachelor” series, surpassed only by the premieres of the 20th and 21st seasons of “The Bachelorette” (1.92 million and 2.8 million viewers, respectively) and the 8th and 9th seasons of “Bachelor in Paradise” (2.6 million and 2.08 million viewers, respectively).

Each season of The Bachelor has seen a larger audience at its premiere, and the premiere of The Golden Bachelor, the network's first attempt at producing a reality show about dating for people over the age of 60, was watched live by 4.3 million people.

The Golden Bachelorette's viewership numbers do not include delayed broadcasts or streams on Hulu, where The Golden Bachelor found its audience – last year's premiere set a streaming record as the most-watched unscripted ABC episode of all time on Hulu after attracting 13.9 million viewers in its first 35 days.

Neither ABC nor Hulu have released any viewership numbers for “The Golden Bachelorette,” nor did representatives immediately respond to Forbes’ request for comment on Wednesday.

Important background

“The Golden Bachelor” has been a bright spot for the franchise, which has struggled with declining viewership in recent years. “The Bachelorette” has particularly lost viewership since longtime host Chris Harrison was fired for controversial comments, and “Bachelor in Paradise” looked dead after a delayed renewal announcement from ABC. However, the network ultimately decided that a 10th season will premiere in 2025. “The Bachelorette” viewership has steadily declined since season 12, starring JoJo Fletcher, aired in 2016, and the same was true for “The Bachelor” until the season 28 premiere in January of this year saw ratings increase slightly.

tangent

Joan Vassos, 61, stars in “The Golden Bachelorette.” Vassos was a contestant on “The Golden Bachelor,” but left the show in week three due to a family emergency. The 24 men competing this season range in age from 57 to 69 and include an emergency room doctor, a retired Marine officer and a rancher.
