President Freeman's Tip for Journaling LDS Conferences

President Freeman's Tip for Journaling LDS Conferences

As General Conference approaches, many of us are considering how best to prepare and learn from the Lord this weekend.

On Instagram, Young Women general president Emily Belle Freeman recently shared one of her favorite tips for taking notes during general conference—using colored stickers.

To prepare, she likes to get a new pack of stickers and then assigns specific colors to topics or questions that are on her mind. “As I listen to the conference, I write down any inspirations I get in these areas or any quotes I hear, and then put a sticker next to each quote or inspiration,” she explains.

“My diary is full of color when the last session is over. At the end of the conference I will go back and read through each category. The inspiration that comes from this, combined with the quotes I record, becomes a powerful personal study.”

President Freeman praises her mother for teaching her to record her thoughts and impressions during conference and notes that Elder David A. Bednar's suggestions helped her refine this process.

Like President Freeman, Elder Bednar takes a thematic approach. He reflects on conference messages using a three-part template.

“For me personally, my study focused on the teachings and principles, the invitations to action, and the promised blessings conveyed in the messages,” he shared in an Instagram post several years ago.

No matter what conference or study approach is right for you, recording promptings can help you recall spiritual insights and show the Lord that you are open to His guidance. As President Russell M. Nelson said:

“Pray for your worries, your fears, your weaknesses – yes, the true desires of your heart, in the name of Jesus Christ. And then listen! Write down the thoughts that come to mind. Write down your feelings and take the actions you are asked to take. As you repeat this process day after day, month after month, year after year, you will “grow into the principle of revelation.”
