QB of undefeated team enters transfer portal due to NIL dispute

Quarterback Matthew Sluka will not play for UNLV this season, a surprise and highly anticipated announcement late Monday night.

Sluka is a veteran college quarterback who began his career at Holy Cross before committing to UNLV and head coach Barry Odom. Sluka has since been instrumental in UNLV's 3-0 start to the season, but the starting quarterback announced he is entering the transfer portal and will use his redshirt season.

According to his late-night announcement, Sluka claimed he had been promised certain commitments that he had not kept since enrolling. He also claims it was made clear that those commitments would not be kept in the future.

“I have decided to use my redshirt year and will not play any more games this season,” Sluka wrote. “I chose to attend UNLV because of certain commitments that were made to me that were not honored after I enrolled. Despite discussions, it became clear that those commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program.”

So far this season, Sluka has been UNLV's passing leader with 318 yards and 6 touchdowns and also led the team with 253 rushing yards. UNLV has beaten Houston and Kansas on the road so far this season, but it's hard to imagine the undefeated start lasting much longer without Sluka in the lineup.
