Rain brings relief from weekend fire threat – NBC Chicago

Rain brings relief from weekend fire threat – NBC Chicago

Morning showers on Friday brought some brief relief from the dry weather, but they likely won't be enough to keep the fire threat at bay this weekend.

The wet weather early Friday will clear as the day progresses and milder temperatures are expected. According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, highs across the Chicago area will be in the upper 60s to mid 70s.

There may be more rain in the coming days.

While Saturday looks to be mostly sunny and warm, with highs in the mid 70s and low 80s, rain is possible overnight. According to the storm team's forecast, rain is likely to occur between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday.

However, heavy rain is not expected, so there may be dangerous conditions on Sunday.

The National Weather Service expects an elevated fire threat to remain Sunday “due to the combination of dry conditions and gusty winds.”

Meanwhile, a massive geomagnetic storm could make the Northern Lights visible in the Chicago area on Friday.

While clouds may have obscured many views of the lights on Thursday, it is possible that the lights will be visible again on Friday and conditions will be significantly clearer across the region. However, the aurora borealis may not be as strong, meaning using a phone camera could be a better way to see it, according to officials.

Check back for updates as the forecast evolves.
