LAKEWOOD — Massillon and Lakewood St. Edward will face off tonight at Lakewood Stadium in the battle of the 2023 high school football state champions. Kickoff time is 7 p.m.

St. Edward defeated Springfield 31-21 to win last year's Division I state championship. Massillon beat Hoban 7-2 to win the Division II title, the Tigers' first state championship in the playoff era.

Well, that's a quick change in dynamics.

Brody Costin's 69-yard catch and run for a touchdown put St. Edward ahead 14-10. It felt like Massillon had been ahead by 10 points a minute ago.

Due to problems with the clock there will be a slight delay. The game is expected to kick off at 19:10.

Lakewood St. Edward gets the ball first

Massillon won the coin toss and elected to postpone. St. Edward will receive the opening kickoff and defend the Madison Avenue goal. For those unfamiliar with Lakewood, that's the south goal.

Massillon and Lakewood St. Edward's football season at a glance

Massillon enters the season with a 3-1 record. The Tigers opened the season with a 35-20 win over NFL Academy UK, shut out GlenOak 45-0, lost their home game to Bergen Catholic 35-21 and beat Canisius 41-7.

St. Edward is also 3-1. The Eagles defeated Pickerington North 28-0 and Saint Joseph's Prep 35-21, lost to Boyle County 38-21 and beat Elder 24-17.
