Roche Bros. Supermarkets is selling 51 percent of the shares to supplier Bozzuto's

MANSFIELD Roche Bros Supermarkets Inc., a 20-store grocery chain in eastern Massachusetts under the Roche Bros., Sudbury Farms and Brothers Marketplace brands, said it has entered into a “strategic partnership” in which its Connecticut-based supplier has acquired a majority stake the business.

In a news release, Roche Bros. executives did not provide details about the deal with Bozzuto's Inc. However, attorney Andrew Upton said on Oct. 29 during a meeting of the Boston Licensing Board that Bozzuto's had acquired 51% of Roche Bros. as a result of members of the grocery chain's ownership group will withdraw.

“This decision was made thoughtfully and with our team, our customers and our shared values as our top priority,” Roche Bros. co-owners Caitlin, Ed and Rick Roche said in a prepared statement. “After many wonderful years as a family business, this partnership will allow us to strengthen our stability, ensure quality and continue our positive impact on the community.”

Roche Bros. was founded in Roslindale in 1952 as a meat and grocery store. Since then, the company has expanded to 20 stores, including locations in Acton, Boston (two), Bridgewater, Cambridge, Duxbury, Easton, Marshfield, Mashpee, Medfield, Millis, Natick, Needham (two), Sudbury, Watertown, Wellesley and Westborough, Weston and Westwood.

Both parties say the grocery chain's operations will continue as usual

Bozzuto's went before the Boston Licensing Board on Tuesday over the transfer of liquor licenses with some of its Boston stores. During the meeting, Upton said nothing else would change.

“No aspect of operations here (Boston) or anywhere in Massachusetts will change,” he said.

Roche Bros. reiterated Upton's statement in a news release, saying customers would not notice a change. Caitlin and Rick Roche remain in leadership positions.

Michael Bozzuto, owner of Bozzuto's, could not be reached for comment. Bozzuto's was founded in 1945 and is based in Cheshire, Connecticut. It is a food wholesaler that has been supplying Roche Bros. since the mid-2000s.

“Michael Bozzuto shares our passion for serving the community and supporting our employees,” the Roche family said in their statement. “We are grateful for this partnership, which we believe honors our legacy while providing exciting growth opportunities.”
