PISCATAWAY − Rutgers football nearly lost its lead but held on for a narrow win for the second straight week.

The Scarlet Knights defeated Washington 21-18 on Friday night at SHI Stadium and are 4-0 this season for the first time since 2012.

The Huskies had a chance to tie the score with 35 seconds left, but kicker Grady Gross missed a 55-yard field goal attempt as the final seconds expired.

This is how the game developed:

The Huskies scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Will Rogers to Denzel Boston, converting the two-point attempt.

It's 21-18 Rutgers.

Rutgers had a third-and-4, but Brown took the handoff and rumbled 37 yards for a touchdown.

It's 21-10 Scarlet Knights.

A 51-yard pass from Will Rogers to Denzel Boston cut Rutgers' lead to 14-10.

Kaliakmanis throws a great pass to Ian Strong in the end zone on first-and-10 at the Huskies 15, Strong made a great catch and the score is 14-3 Rutgers.

Scarlet Knights got help from the Huskies. On the previous play, Rutgers attempted a 38-yard field goal, but it was blocked. But Washington was called for an illegal switch that gave the Scarlet Knights a first down.

They took great advantage from it.

Monangai hits the ball from a meter away and it's 7-3 for the Scarlet Knights.

Athan Kaliakmanis made some big plays on this drive, including a 19-yard pass to Chris Long on third-and-10 from the Rutgers 37, a 13-yard pass on second-and-9 from the Washington 43 and a 12-yard pass to Dymere Miller on third-and-9 from the Huskies 29.

A 22-yard field goal gives the Huskies a 3-0 lead.

Washington reached the 5-yard line (with the help of a roughing pass call on Jordan Thomspon on 1-and-10 at the 22), but Rutgers kept the Huskies out of the end zone.

Rutgers vs. Washington Prediction, Tips, Odds

Rutgers is a 2.5-point favorite as of September 26, according to Action Network.

O/U: Over 44.5 (-111), Under 44.5 (-109)

Money line: Rutgers -130, Washington +110

Forecast: It's not easy to predict this game – it will be the toughest opponent both teams have faced so far this season. If the Scarlet Knights can get off to a fast start and get the crowd cheering, that should give them a pretty good advantage. But it will come down to limiting potential big plays from Will Rogers and finding a way to move the ball effectively against a high-octane defense. Most importantly? Don't turn the ball over.
