Polls in Indiana are now closed and voters have cast their ballots for about 800 school board seats across the state.

In Hamilton County, partisan politics played a role again as candidates vied for school board seats in Carmel, Fishers and Noblesville – even though those elections were officially nonpartisan.

Shapiro and Wheeler lead the Carmel Clay School Board race

Jon Shapiro and Kristina (Kris) Wheeler, endorsed by the political action committee Support CCS, a “nonpartisan” group, are leading the race so far.

As of 6:15 p.m., the Hamilton County Election Office had counted 40% of ballots from registered voters in the form of paper mail-in ballots or ballots from in-person early voters.

Hamilton County has 28,3202 registered voters in this election. Officials haven't yet sent out voter turnout data for Tuesday, so it's not clear at this point what percentage of the total vote they counted.

The other two candidates are Robin Clark and Dina Ferchmin. They are supported by the Carmel Excellence political action committee, which “supports sensible conservative school board members.”

The four candidates are running for two seats on the Carmel Clay School Board. The two leading candidates with the most votes win the seats.

If Clark and Ferchmin win, they will sit on the board with Greg Brown, who ran with a group of conservatives in 2022, and the board will be majority held by conservatives.

Candidates backed by a conservative group are trailing in the race for the Hamilton Southeastern School board

Moderate candidates are leading for seats in Delaware Township, Fall Creek Township and Wayne Township on the Hamilton Southeastern School Board.

Two candidates are running for each seat.

In total, the board consists of seven members who are elected on a staggered basis. With four conservatives already on the board, they will hold the majority even if moderate candidates Sarah Parks-Reese and Latrica Schooley defeat their conservative opponents.

The Conservatives are Greg Lannan, Terry Tolle and John Stewart, all of whom are supported by the local conservative group Fishers One.

Incumbents Parks-Reese and Suzanne Thomas and newcomer Schooley are endorsed by the Hamilton Southeastern Education Association. The teachers union generally sides with Democrats, although Thomas describes himself as a conservative and has voted with the majority on several issues.

Moderate candidates are leading in the Noblesville School Board election

So far, three moderate candidates are in the lead for at-large Noblesville School Board seats.

The six candidates are running on two opposing three-candidate lists – one list is conservative and the other is moderate. The top three candidates with the most votes will be elected or re-elected to the board.

Conservatives Brad Helvey, David Dawson and Alison Hanley are endorsed by the Indiana Family Action PAC, while moderates Christi Crosser, Stephanie Lambert and Bret Richardson are endorsed by the Noblesville Teachers Forum.

Crosser and Lambert are current incumbents on the board.

If two conservative candidates win, they will have a majority and join Misti Ray on the five-member board. Ray was elected in 2022 and ran on a conservative platform.
