Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers is ejected at home after the ball bounces off the MLB umpire

An MLB referee unintentionally made it into the highlight of Game 4 of the National League Division Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres at Petco Park on Wednesday night.

With the Dodgers leading 5-0 and trying to extend their lead, Los Angeles star Shohei Ohtani drew a walk early in the fourth inning and then advanced to second on a Mookie Betts flyout. The next batter, Teoscar Hernandez, threw an 0-2 pitch down the third base line for what certainly looked like extra bases – and an easy trot home for the speedy Ohtani.

Only the ball was stopped in its tracks when it collided with third base umpire Mark Ripperger, who couldn't get out of the way in time after it deflected off the glove of Padres third baseman Manny Machado. Machado was then able to play the ball and immediately threw Ohtani out as he tried to score.

What a piece by Ripperger! Seriously, it was just a case of the referee being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Still, Ohtani was visibly upset with Ripperger from the Dodgers dugout.

Luckily for the Dodgers, the bizarre play doesn't appear to have any negative impact on the final score of Game 4, as the club is still in charge with an 8-0 lead.
