The Commanders drop the New York Giants 27-22 to close out the season

The New York Giants (2-6) hosted the NFC East-leading Washington Commanders (6-2) at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon in hopes of maintaining their slim postseason chances.

On a perfect football day in northern New Jersey, the Giants wore their old jerseys from their 1980s glory days and handed out bobbleheads of Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor.

The stage was set for the Giants to perhaps cause a slight surprise as 4-point underdogs at home.

This is how it went…

  • The Commanders reached the end zone on three consecutive possessions in the first half and entered the red zone tied 3-3. They reached the red zone three times in the second half, but the Giants held them to two field goals.
  • The Giants entered the game leading the NFL in sacks (35). They were held without a sack in this game (the operative word remains) and only got two QB hits on Jayden Daniels, both by Azeez Ojulari.
  • Quarterback Daniel Jones was 4-for-4 passing in the first half with a touchdown but had no passing yards. He is the first player in the NFL to do so since 2000. Rookie wideout Malik Nabers went without a catch in the first half.

Commanders kicker Austin Seibert hit a 20-yard field goal to give Washington a 27-16 lead with 3:46 left in the fourth quarter. The Giants scored again, cutting the lead to 27-22, but failed to convert the two-point conversion. It was their second failed attempt of the game and they are now 0-6 when converting two points this season.

  • RB Tyrone Tracy Jr. was the start of the show in the first half, but was essentially pushed to the background as the Giants had to play from behind and rely more heavily on the pass.
  • QB Daniel Jones overcame a difficult first half and posted some respectable numbers – 20 of 26 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed seven times for 54 yards, including a grueling two-yard touchdown run, while returning a fourth touchdown on a ticky-tack OPI.
  • WR Malik Nabers caught nine passes for 59 yards – all in the second half.
  • LB Micah McFadden led the Giants with 11 tackles (six solo) on the afternoon.

The only injury to report occurred late in the fourth quarter when Darius Slayton left the field after recovering a fumble he had forced in an interception. He was examined in the blue tent and went to the locker room to be checked for a concussion.

Head coach Brian Daboll will have a Zoom call with the team's beat writers on Monday afternoon before some players are also made available.

Big Blue will return to practice on Wednesday before a Week 10 game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, November 10th at the Allianz Arena in Munich. Kickoff is at 9:30 p.m. EST.
