The Karva Chauth celebrations will bring an economic boost of Rs 22,000 crore across the country

The festival of Karva Chauth is deeply rooted in Indian culture and spirituality and has become a significant economic event. Business worth an estimated Rs 22,000 crore is expected in markets across the country.

The traditional festival is celebrated across India on Sunday and marks a day of fasting and prayer for the well-being and longevity of spouses.

This year's spending is expected to surpass last year's ₹15,000 crore mark, reflecting a surge in enthusiasm and consumer activity.

According to MP Praveen Khandelwal, the celebrations reflect Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Vocal for Local' campaign and promote the use of domestically produced goods.Over the past week, markets across the country witnessed a lively atmosphere with bustling crowds shopping for clothes, jewellery, cosmetics, gift items and Puja essentials in preparation for the occasion.

Delhi, one of the key hubs for the celebrations, is expected to contribute significantly to this economic boom with revenue expected to reach around Rs 4,000 crore.

The shopping spree includes a variety of items associated with Karva Chauth including jewellery, traditional clothing, makeup products, saris and religious items such as karva pots, strainers, lamps, wicks and prayer books.

Additionally, red glass bangles, anklets, toe rings, lockets and intricately designed karva thalis are some of the popular items purchased. Silver Karvas have also been launched this year and are expected to see high demand.

The use of henna (mehendi), which is considered auspicious for the festival, is also becoming increasingly popular: markets, temples and public places are full of women queuing up to have their hands decorated.

In Delhi, the Hanuman Temple at Connaught Place has become a prominent spot where thousands gather for mehendi while beauty salons and private mehendi sessions are fully booked. Henna artists find a valuable opportunity to earn a living during this time.

Karva Chauth not only boosts retail activity but also sets the stage for the upcoming wedding season with many buyers placing orders for gold jewelry.

The wedding season, which begins in November, traditionally brings a surge in bookings for bridal jewelry, and the festival serves as an early catalyst for these purchases.
