The last time Las Vegas experienced 100 degree heat for this long

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – 2024 has been a year of record-breaking heat, and every year it seems like new records are broken every summer. But how far back do these records go?

Another excessive heat warning is in effect for much of Southern Nevada this week, even though fall has long since begun. According to weather data, the last time the heat lasted this long was in 1947.

This year the valley experienced 100 days of heat of 100 degrees or more! Last Friday the valley experienced its 103rd day.

FIRST WEATHER WARNING: Forecast Outlook – 09/30/24

This means that 2024 is the new record holder for the highest number of triple-digit days in a year. Triple digits are not typical for this time of year, as the average high temperature in late September is between 89 and 90 degrees.

But after the hottest summer on record, valley residents can be thankful they won't be competing for the hottest high temperatures on record this week. That honor was broken in July when the valley experienced 120-degree heat for the first time in history.

In 1947 the heat was 100 degrees until October 4th. This week, high temperatures are expected to continue at 101 to 108 degrees through the weekend.

For those looking to take a break from the heat, cooling stations have reopened throughout the valley while the heat continues.
