The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing a rushing running back

The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing running back Jonathan Ward to their active roster, sources tell PennLive. It was first reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC2-TV in Houston. Ward was on the team's practice squad and had used all three of his practice squad highs. With running back Cordarrelle Patterson out and Ward becoming a key member of the group's special teams team, Ward has secured an active roster spot.

It's unclear what the corresponding move is to add Ward to the 53-man roster. Ward was signed by the Steelers after a tryout in rookie minicamp and impressed during training camp before suffering a hamstring injury.

Ward has spent time with several teams since returning from Central Michigan, including the Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets and Tennessee Titans. The 27-year-old Ward had just 91 rushing yards in his career.

In three games this season, Ward recorded five carries for 22 yards while playing a key role in all of the team's coverage units on special teams.
