As we get these early results, it's important to remember that it's still too early to tell which way this presidential race will go.

When votes were counted in the 2020 election, Donald Trump appeared to be ahead in some key states on election night, but those numbers were later overtaken by votes for Joe Biden, as mail-in ballots were popular among Democrats at the time.

Trump is currently leading in North Carolina and Georgia in the current vote count. However, this could be another so-called “red mirage” – and the results could later shift in Kamala Harris' favor as more ballots are counted. We must wait for a more complete count before we know the true trend in these states.

Additionally, at the national level, due to differences in time zones across the U.S., some states with fewer electoral votes (e.g., Kentucky with eight) will announce their results earlier than states with a larger number of votes (e.g., Kentucky). California, with 54), which could change the current overall results.

There are also the battleground states. Both Trump and Harris need to win at least three victories to secure the White House. However these swing states vote could have a big impact on the election.

Map showing the results of the 2024 presidential election. Democrat Kamala Harris won 27 electoral votes from four states. Republican Donald Trump won 105 electoral votes from 10 states. There are 406 votes left to cast and 270 needed to win.
