The weather forecast for Fresno calls for rain and cooler temperatures. When do the rain showers start?

After months of dry, hot weather, some rain and a sharp drop in temperatures are expected in the Fresno area, the National Weather Service said.

“A change in pattern will occur early next week (and winds will shift to the northwest, drawing cooler air from the North Pacific into central California”), the weather agency said on X, formerly called Twitter. “Afternoon high temperatures next week are expected to be about 5 degrees cooler than average for this time of year.”

According to the National Weather Service, the weather change is expected to begin Sunday.

What's the weather forecast for Fresno?

According to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service, there will be mostly cloudy skies Saturday with a high of about 79 degrees, a low of about 57 degrees and winds of about 5 mph.

Sunday will be partly sunny with a high around 77 and a low around 56.

Winds are expected to reach 5 to 10 mph and gusts up to 24 mph.

When will it rain in Fresno?

Rain clouds rolled in late Sunday evening, said Dan Harty, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Hanford.

Harty said there was a “low chance of rain” Sunday, adding that residents shouldn't expect “anything significant, maybe a few hundredths of an inch” of rainfall.

Skies are expected to be mostly sunny Monday, with a 30% chance of rain before 11 a.m. The high is around 67 and the low is around 48.

“There will be stronger winds on Monday,” Harty said. “Expect some gusty winds Monday morning, maybe around 25 mph or so.”

Tuesday's high will be around 65 and the low will be around 45.

Harty said there is a 20% chance of showers through Tuesday morning with “very, very light amounts” of rain in the Fresno area.

He added that those closer to the Sierra Nevada would have a “better chance” of seeing some moisture, predicting “up to a tenth to a quarter of an inch of liquid in the mountains (and a few inches of snow.” ).

On Wednesday the high will be around 68 and the low will be around 46.

Thursday will see sunny skies with a high near 68 and winds up to 5 mph.

“The temperature will cool significantly during this period,” Harty said, adding that Fresno area residents can expect highs in the upper 60s to near 70s for most of next week.

“We’re not really going to warm up,” he said.

How can I prepare for rain in Fresno?

To prepare for rain, the National Weather Service urged residents to do the following:

  • Remove leaves from storm drains.

  • Clean gutters.

  • Check windshield wipers.

  • Have an umbrella and rain gear ready.

  • Be careful on slippery roads

  • Be careful of snowy roads at higher altitudes
