There is at least one bright spot for Michigan Democrats in this election

Alsobrooks defeated the moderate Hogan, who ran as an anti-Trump Republican (but not a pro-Harris supporter) and enjoyed wide popularity during his two terms as governor in Maryland, even though the state was clearly Democratic in the presidential election. Alsobrooks is the county supervisor for Maryland's Prince George's County, near Washington, D.C., and will be Maryland's first Black senator.

Over 105 million dollars According to the nonpartisan organization OpenSecrets, both candidates spent $200,000 on the race, making it the fourth most expensive Senate race in the 2024 election cycle. In contrast, the previous seat holder, retiring Democrat Ben Cardin, just spent money $5.1 million upon his re-election in 2018.

Hogan's entry into the race February made what was considered a reliably Democratic Senate seat competitive and apparently threatened Democrats' plans to retain control of the chamber. Major Republican donors poured money into Hogan's campaign, and a conservative super PAC flooded Maryland's airwaves with attack ads against Alsobrooks. In the end, it wasn't enough, as Alsobrooks was able to overcome the onslaught in a similar fashion to her victory over another well-financed candidate in the state's Democratic primary, House Speaker David Trone.
