Could the late arrival of Lionel Messi and the Argentina national football team on Wednesday evening affect their performance?

Due to travel restrictions and Hurricane Milton hitting Florida, the team left Miami yesterday afternoon and made a stopover in Colombia before arriving in Venezuela the evening before a World Cup qualifier at Monumental Stadium in Maturín. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET today.

Messi is in the starting line-up and will be Argentina's captain against Venezuela. It will be his first game with the national team since injuring his right ankle in the Copa America final against Columbia on July 14.

He missed Argentina's 3-0 win over Chile on September 6 and the 2-1 loss against Colombia on September 10 in the second leg of the Copa America final. The loss to Colombia was only Argentina's fourth defeat in its last 65 games.

Yes, Messi is expected to be in action against Venezuela today. He was listed as a starter.

Messi returned from injury on September 14 at Inter Miami. He played five games, scoring four goals and helping Inter Miami secure the MLS Supporters' Shield. The regular season title was the number 46 for club and country in Messi's legendary career.

“Messi is fine. “He has played several games for his team in recent weeks after not being present at the last call-up, which we agreed because he needed to recover and get more minutes,” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said this week. “Leo is training with the team and is ready to be part of the team to play against Venezuela, who will be a big rival.”

Is Argentina at risk of losing its second game in a row? The oddsmakers don't think so. Argentina is the favorite (-175) to win against Venezuela (+525), while a draw after regulation time has odds of +270, according to BETMGM.

Which teams beat Argentina? Here are the last 4 defeats

Before the 2-1 defeat against Colombia, Argentina last lost in World Cup qualifying last November 2023 against Uruguay, Saudi Arabia in the 2022 World Cup opener and Brazil in the semi-finals of the 2019 Copa America.

The world champion was unable to fly directly from Argentina or the United States to Venezuela due to travel restrictions imposed by the Venezuelan government. They left Miami with a stop in Barranquilla, Colombia, before arriving in Maturín, Venezuela, on Wednesday evening.

Argentina trained this week in Fort Lauderdale at the grounds of Inter Miami, Messi's Major League Soccer club. Those plans were made ahead of the threat from Milton, a Category 3 storm that hit Florida late Wednesday.

Messi and Argentina return home for a second game against Bolivia on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.

Messi then returns to South Florida for Inter Miami's regular season finale on October 19. The MLS Cup Playoffs begin October 25th.
