Today's rain and snow will result in the first frost of the season in several areas tonight

Valley residents brave the rain-soaked roads while drivers at higher elevations contend with snow just days before Halloween.

The wet portion of this cold, wet weather is not expected to last until October 31st. While it warms up on Thursday, the Salt Lake Valley will see high temperatures in the mid-40s warm up from nearly all other areas of Utah.

As for low temperatures tonight, temperatures below freezing can be expected across most of Utah.

National Weather Service issues freeze warning

Only the Lake Powell area and southern Washington County will be spared from temperatures falling to 32 degrees or below, with some areas expected to see freezing temperatures as low as 27 degrees.

It will be the first freeze of the season for Salt Lake City and Ogden, among others.

NWS has issued a freeze warning that will be in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The warning was in effect for Castle Country, the Northern Wasatch Front, the Salt Lake Valley, the Western Uinta Basin, Capitol Reef National Park and surrounding areas, and Western Canyonlands.

These locations include the major cities of West Jordan, Bountiful, Ogden, Salt Lake City and Sandy.

“Temperatures this cold could destroy or damage crops and gardens and may freeze external pipes such as those connected to swamp coolers, mobile homes, mobile homes and exposed sprinkler lines,” according to the National Weather Service. “Take action now to avoid property damage or crop loss.”

NWS recommended residents cover or protect at-risk plants, drain or winterize exposed sprinkler lines, cover exterior water lines, and protect or winterize mobile homes, mobile homes and swamp coolers.

The frost warning comes into effect today at 9 p.m.

The winter weather advisory is still in effect

Meanwhile, winter weather warnings remained in effect for mountainous areas of Utah, where total snow accumulations could reach up to 16 inches in some locations.

The cold overnight temperatures will also bring snow to lower elevations, where sea storms could occur Wednesday morning, affecting commuters whose journey takes them southeast of the Great Salt Lake or Utah Lake.

The consultation ends on Wednesday at 6 a.m.

Halloween prediction

By trick-or-treating on Thursday, the day will have warmed to about 56 degrees along the Wasatch Front. However, as the witching hour approaches, temperatures drop to 53 degrees by 5 p.m

Night owls should wrap up warmly and expect temperatures to be around 49 degrees until 8 p.m

In southern Utah, high temperatures on Halloween are around 65 degrees.

Don't make yourself comfortable

The next winter storm is just around the corner.

Rain showers are expected in the state late Saturday night through Sunday, the end of Daylight Saving Time.

And right behind that, there will be another round of rain and snow on Wednesday, right after the election, if the forecast models stay on track.
