Updates, Highlights for Nittany Lions Trojans

play

The Penn State Nittany Lions and Southern California Trojans will meet for the first time since 2017, adding to the slate of Week 7 games.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams as Big Ten opponents since the 2017 Rose Bowl Game.

The Trojans are looking to bounce back from last week's 24-17 loss to Minnesota that left them out of the latest USA LBM Coaches Poll. Undefeated Penn State moved up to No. 5 in the poll after a 27-11 home win over UCLA last weekend.

Penn State running back Nick Singleton is expected to be back this week after not playing against the Bruins. The Nittany Lions leaned on quarterback Drew Allar and his depth in the running back room to rush for 85 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. Kaytron Allen had 78 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Allar completed 17 of 24 passes for 237 yards and a touchdown.

USC quarterback Miller Moss completed 23 of 38 passes for 200 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the loss to the Golden Gophers. Running back Woody Marks had 134 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

After a back-and-forth duel with Minnesota, USC appeared to have reached a goal-line score after quarterback Max Brosmer was declared short of the end zone on a 1-yard keeper. The play was overturned after a review and the Golden Gophers' game-winning touchdown came after Moss intercepted a pass with 14 seconds left in the game.

Penn State took an early lead, but it didn't last long after Quinten Joyner provided the answer for the Trojans, scoring a touchdown with a 75-yard kick return. USC leads Penn State 7-3 with 4:53 left in the first quarter.

Penn State must cap off a 14-play drive with a 34-yard field goal to take the early lead. The Nittany Lions took a 3-0 lead with 4:53 left in the first quarter after the Trojans held strong and Penn State failed on three consecutive redzone attempts. USC safety Karmari Ramsey had a crucial tackle that brought down tight end Tyler Warren at the 3-yard line on third-and-3.

The Trojans received the ball early in the game but had little to show on their opening drive. The Trojans only managed 15 yards on the drive before being forced to punt. Quarterback Miller Moss completed just one pass to Kyron Hudson, which led to 14 yards and a first down on the second offensive play of the drive.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold returned to the LA Memorial Coliseum before the game to lead the Trojans out of the tunnel.

Darnold led the Vikings to a successful start to the season as one of two undefeated teams entering Week 6 with a 5-0 record.

Kickoff is Saturday, October 12th at 3:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. local time) at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

USC defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn practices for the first time today against his alma mater, Penn State. From 2008 to 2011, Lynn earned All-Big Ten Conference honorable mention three times as a cornerback for the Nittany Lions. He finished his college career with 162 total tackles (seven for a loss), four interceptions and one fumble recovery in 47 games played. He started 37 of his last 38 games.

He spent several years as an assistant coach in the NFL before moving to UCLA in 2023 as a first-year defensive coordinator. D'Anton is the son of former Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn.

The latest US LBM Coaches Poll brought some major shakeups after some unexpected results in Week 6, and the top five looks a little different than the preseason version. No. 3 Oregon moved up three spots in the poll, while No. 7 Alabama and No. 9 Tennessee both fell five spots after each losing in SEC play. No. 5 Penn State moved up two spots, while USC was eliminated entirely after being ranked No. 15 the previous week.

Penn State running back Nick Singleton is expected to play against USC. Singleton was not listed as “questionable” or “out” on the injury report when it was released before the game. He missed last week's home game against UCLA.

He took part in drills during the audition.

After a wild Week 6 of college football, there were some significant changes to the USA TODAY Sports Bowl predictions. There were four upsets among the top 10 teams, and the impact was felt in this week's bowl predictions from the College Football Playoff to the rest of the postseason lineup. Leading the winners was inactive Texas. After Alabama's stunning loss to Vanderbilt, the Longhorns are now the top seed. With Alabama out of the game after a blowout loss to Vanderbilt, Texas fights back against Ohio State to take over as the new No. 1 seed in the USA TODAY Sports Re-Rank 1-134.

The random nature of the sport makes it impossible to predict the outcome of every game. Numerous well-lit buildings in the desert testify to this reality.

College football is particularly prone to such coincidences. Most of the time, analysts feel like they have a handle on which team could prevail in a head-to-head matchup. Then there are Saturdays like the one we just experienced that make us question our entire worldview.

An overreaction? Maybe, but that's what we're here for in this area. Here are the five most common overreactions from Week 6, one of the most chaotic in recent memory. — Eddie Timanus
