What is closed on Columbus Day 2024? Full List – NBC Chicago

Monday, October 14th is the federal holiday Columbus Day, which means many businesses, including the United States Postal Service, will be closed.

However, many states recognize the day as Indigenous Peoples Day, although Illinois is not one of them.

However, the state recognizes Indigenous Peoples Day on a different day — the last Monday in September, after passing a law designating that day in 2017. In 2020, an Illinois lawmaker renewed her push to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. Day, but those efforts have since stalled.

Columbus Day is a public holiday in the city of Chicago. At 11:45 a.m., the 2024 Columbus Day Parade, hosted by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans, begins at the corner of State Street and Wacker Drive.

Here's a breakdown of what's closed on Monday:

Garbage collection

According to the City of Chicago, there will be no trash pickup on Columbus Day. Even if your trash isn't picked up on Mondays, the holiday may impact your regular weekday trash and recycling pickup.

Banks

Several banks' credit unions are likely to close as Columbus Day is considered a holiday by the Federal Reserve. If they wish, banks can be open on Federal Reserve holidays.

Even though most major banks remain closed, you can still use mobile and online services. The stock exchange, however, remains open on this day. However, the bond markets remain closed.

US Postal Service

Due to the holiday, the US Postal Service will be closed on Monday. Mail will also not be delivered as Columbus Day is one of eleven holidays observed by the USPS.

Government building

State government facilities in Illinois will remain closed that day, as will federal government buildings across the country.

The libraries are expected to remain open.

DMV

According to the office's website, ride-hailing services operated by the Illinois Secretary of State's Office will be closed due to the holiday.

Schools

According to the Illinois State Board of Education, Columbus Day is one of the “statutory school holidays” that does not count toward the mandatory 176-day school year.

Chicago Public Schools will be closed Monday as the day is recognized as Indigenous Peoples Day.

Some of the region's largest suburban districts, Indian Prairie School District No. 204, which serves students primarily from Aurora, Naperville, Bolingbrook and Plainfield, will close in observance of Columbus Day.

Elgin Area School District U46 will also be closed Monday to observe both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day.

Community High School District 218, which serves students in several immediate southwest suburbs including Palos Heights, Oak Lawn and Blue Island, is also closed for the holiday.

Stores: Target, Costco, Starbucks and more

Most retailers, grocery stores and restaurants will be open during regular hours. But just to be sure, it's not a bad idea to call ahead or check hours online before heading out.

While Costco is closed on seven holidays throughout the year, it will be open on Columbus Day, its website says.
