Halloween is Thursday, but most communities in the Des Moines area hold their trick-or-treating a day earlier on Beggar's Night. Some children may require waterproof costumes.

Before we head out trick-or-treating, here's what the weather could look like on Wednesday.

What's the forecast for Wednesday in Des Moines?

Wednesday will see a high of 72 degrees and a low of 41 degrees. The rain is expected to begin Tuesday evening and continue throughout Wednesday. The chance of rain on Wednesday evening is also 90%.

Although highs will be in the 70s by midday Wednesday, the rain will bring a cold front, said Brooke Hagenhoff, senior metrologist at the Nation Weather Service office in Des Moines.

“So on Wednesday it will rain most of the day here,” Hagenhoff told the Register. “Not too cool, but definitely very rainy.”

Halloween Thursday will be sunny with a high of 53 and a low of 32 degrees with clear skies.

How long will it rain on Wednesday on Beggar's Night?

Rain and thunderstorms are forecast during the trick-or-treating period from 5:00 p.m. until after 8:00 p.m. The Des Moines metro could see up to 2 inches of rain from early Wednesday into early Thursday.

“Certainly a bad prognosis for anyone who will be out begging on Wednesday,” said Hagenhoff.

The heavy rain could bring thunderstorms, strong winds and possibly hail, Hagenhoff said.

“It's going to be really important for anyone planning to go trick-or-treating to stay safe,” Hagenhoff said. “Check the weather forecast and check radars to ensure they are not in danger whenever they are out and about on Wednesday evening.”
