When is Columbus Day? What's Open and Closed on Monday – NBC Chicago

The federal holiday of Columbus Day falls on Monday, October 11th this year. However, many states and cities now recognize the day as Indigenous Peoples Day.

In 2021, President Joe Biden officially observed Indigenous Peoples Day. More school districts are also recognizing this, including the Chicago Board of Education, which voted in 2019 to replace Columbus Day — the second Monday in October — with Indigenous Peoples Day in the school calendar.

Therefore, CPS will not be holding classes on Monday.

According to the city of Chicago, Columbus Day is a federal holiday and legislation to rename the holiday “Indigenous People's Day” has stalled.

Illinois currently recognizes Indigenous Peoples Day as the last Monday in September after passing a law designating that day in 2017. In 2020, an Illinois lawmaker renewed her push to change the state holiday Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day.

In Chicago, the 2024 Columbus Day Parade, hosted by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans, begins at 11:45 a.m. at the corner of State Street and Wacker Drive.

Ahead of the holiday, here's an overview of what's open and closed on Monday.

Banks

Several banks' credit unions are likely to close as Columbus Day is considered a holiday by the Federal Reserve. If they wish, banks can be open on Federal Reserve holidays.

Even though most major banks remain closed, you can still use mobile and online services. The stock exchange, however, remains open on this day. However, the bond markets remain closed.

US Postal Service

Due to the holiday, the US Postal Service will be closed on Monday. Mail will also not be delivered as Columbus Day is one of eleven holidays observed by the USPS.

Government building

State government facilities in Illinois will remain closed that day, as will federal government buildings across the country.

The libraries are expected to remain open.

Starbucks, Target, Costco and more

Most retailers, grocery stores and restaurants will be open during regular hours. But just to be sure, it's not a bad idea to call ahead or check hours online before heading out.

While Costco is closed on seven holidays throughout the year, it will be open on Columbus Day, its website says.

DMV

According to the office's website, ride-hailing services operated by the Illinois Secretary of State's Office will be closed due to the holiday.

Schools

While some Illinois school districts may be in session, others are not. Chicago Public Schools does not observe Columbus Day, but they do recognize Indigenous Peoples Day.
