States announced record-breaking early voting numbers as voters cast ballots for the next president of the United States as well as other key political seats in their areas.

In Tennessee, more than 820,000 people voted in the Volunteer State, and while the election doesn't break any records compared to the 2020 election, it is well above early voter turnout in the 2016 election, according to data from the Tennessee Secretary of State.

During the first five days of early voting in 2024 in Tennessee, 820,587 ballots were cast through early voting and absentee voting. In 2020, 910,802 ballots were cast, but in 2016, only 609,021 votes were cast during a similar period.

Preliminary voting results: when will we know?

Although these early ballots are being received, the results will not be known for two weeks when they are counted on Election Day, November 5th.

When will we know who will be elected president?

This can take some time.

The excitement surrounding election night and the outcome does not mean that we will know for sure who the winner will be the next morning. In 2023, President Joe Biden's victory was announced by the Associated Press four days after Election Day.

Voters must vote during early voting and on Election Day for the candidates they believe are best suited for the political office for which they are running. However, counting all ballots takes time, depending on the state and applicable election laws.

Some recent rule changes almost lengthened the process.

After the 2020 election, when now-former President Donald Trump falsely claimed voter fraud after losing the election to Biden, some counties around the country voted not to certify the election. And they even pushed to replace machine ballot counting with people counting their ballots by hand, a practice that studies show is less accurate and timely than using machines.

In Georgia, the initiative almost became a reality.

A new voting rule introduced in Georgia would have required thousands of poll workers to count ballots by hand. Last month, a judge in Georgia struck down that rule along with six others in the state, and despite Republican efforts to overturn the judge's decision, the courts have stood firm and election workers are not required to count ballots by hand.

Federal law requires governors to issue documents, called certificates of determination, that begin the process of convening the Electoral College to elect the president and vice president. Secretaries of state, or another official depending on the state, compiles the election results from local and county governments so that the winner can be announced.

Representatives for the Republican governors of New Hampshire, Vermont and Virginia – all states that are trending toward Harris in polls – told USA TODAY that they intend to certify the results regardless of the winner. And senior election officials in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and North Carolina also said they would not be influenced.
