Which streets will be closed in Des Moines for the 2024 IMT Marathon on Sunday?

Thousands of runners will take to the streets this Sunday for the annual IMT Des Moines Marathon.

Race day includes the 26.2-mile course as well as the Bankers Trust Marathon Relay, IMT Des Moines Half Marathon and the Principal 5K Road Race. This year's marathon has been updated to have “fewer hills and more spectator areas,” according to the IMT marathon description.

The race begins in the heart of downtown Des Moines and takes runners through Pappajohn Sculpture Park, Drake University and the historic Drake District, through Valley Junction and around the southern edge of Gray's Lake until they cross the finish line.

With the marathon and these races come road closures. Here you can find out which roads are likely to be closed and when:

Closed now until Monday lunchtime

  • Walnut Street from Third Street to Fourth Street

Sunday closed until 6 p.m

  • Court Avenue from Second Avenue to Fifth Avenue
  • Third street from Walnut Street to Vine Street
  • Fourth Street from Walnut Street to Market Street

Closed Sunday from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m

  • Court Avenue from Water Street to Second Avenue
  • Water Street from Walnut Street to Vine Street

Closed Sunday from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m

  • Fifth Avenue from Court Avenue to Grand Avenue
  • Grand Avenue from East 13th Street to Seventh Street
  • Locust Street from Fifth Avenue to East 13th Street
  • East Seventh Street from Locust Street to Grand Avenue
  • East Walnut Street from East 13th Street to East 12th Street
  • East Court Avenue from Dey Street to Finkbine Drive (westbound only)
  • East Walnut Street from East Ninth Street/Finkbine Drive to East 2nd Street
  • East Second Street from East Walnut Street to East Court Avenue
  • East Court Avenue from East 2nd Street to Water Street

  • Grand Avenue from Polk Boulevard to 63rd Street (eastbound only)
  • Railroad Avenue from Southwest 63rd Street to Southwest 62nd Street
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway from Southwest Second Street to Southeast Fourth Street
  • Southeast Fourth Street from Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway to Scott Avenue
  • Scott Avenue/Southeast First Street from Southeast Fourth Street to the Scott Avenue/Southeast First Street bridge
  • Polk Boulevard from Grand Avenue to Kingman Boulevard
  • Kingman Boulevard from Polk Boulevard to 25th Street
  • 25th Street from Kingman Boulevard to Carpenter Avenue
  • 45th Street from Grand Avenue to Center Trails

What will the weather be like at the IMT marathon?

High temperatures of around 81 degrees are expected Sunday, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

It is expected to be sunny most of the day with southwesterly winds blowing around 6 to 11 mph, with possible gusts around 18 mph.
