Who will win the presidential race? Latest polls, Tuesday leader

Tomorrow, voters will cast their ballot to elect the person they believe should lead the United States for the next four years. But even if the ballots are cast, it could still be a while before we know the results.

After an unprecedented year in the presidential campaign, with multiple reported assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump and the resignation of President Joe Biden as the presumptive Democratic nominee, he gave Vice President Kamala Harris the path to inauguration just months before the election. What matters now is that Americans spend just one day announcing their choice by voting for who they believe will best lead the country over the next four years.

And it's a close race.

Here's a look at who's ahead in the presidential election polls ahead of Election Day, when we can expect results and more.

Who is ahead in the presidential polls?

It's still an incredibly close race as we're less than 24 hours from Election Day, but things changed (slightly) over the weekend.

The latest national polls still have Trump and Harris neck and neck, with the two candidates making final attempts to win voters over. TIPP's tracking poll of 1,411 likely voters, conducted Friday through Sunday, shows Trump and Harris at 48%. The error rate is 2.7 percentage points.

A new ABC News/Ipsos poll released Sunday puts Harris slightly ahead of Trump. The poll of 2,267 likely voters, conducted between Tuesday and Friday, showed Harris leading Trump 49% to 46% heading into Election Day.

“This narrow three-point difference with Trump is in line with the average gap between Democrats and Republicans in the last eight presidential elections, with Democrats winning a majority of the vote in seven,” ABC News reported. “Nevertheless, the result leaves a wide field open to the whims of the Electoral College.”

Iowa upset? A recent poll shows Kamala Harris ahead in the swing state

In an unexpected turn of events, a recent poll in Iowa that once predicted Trump in the 2024 election shows Harris with a slight edge over the Republican candidate.

Ruby red Iowa is starting to look a little blue after a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll shows Harris leading Trump 47% to 44%. While other states were close in polls, Trump had a strong lead in the state, with an 18-point lead over Biden in a June poll in Iowa, and although the gap narrowed when Harris took over the campaign, Trump still held on a 4-point lead over Harris in a September Iowa poll.

Where are Trump and Harris today?

Both candidates are continuing their campaign in the final moments before Election Day in states that could make or break this election for the candidates.

Trump is holding four rallies in key swing states, starting in North Carolina before traveling to Pennsylvania for two campaign stops and concluding the day in Michigan. Harris, meanwhile, is in Pennsylvania, holding rallies in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, followed by a concert in Allentown.

When will we know who will be elected president?

This can take some time.

The anticipation of election night and the results does not mean that we will know for sure who the winner will be in the morning. In 2020, President Joe Biden's victory was announced by the Associated Press four days after Election Day.

Voters have the opportunity during early voting and on Election Day to vote for the candidates they believe are best suited for the political office for which they are running. However, counting all ballots takes time, depending on the state and applicable election laws.

Federal law requires governors to issue documents, called certificates of determination, that begin the process of convening the Electoral College to elect the president and vice president. Secretaries of state, or another official depending on the state, compiles the election results from local and county governments so that the winner can be announced.

Representatives for the Republican governors of New Hampshire, Vermont and Virginia – all states that are trending toward Harris in polls – told USA TODAY they intend to certify the results regardless of the winner. And senior election officials in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and North Carolina also said they would not be influenced.

Who is likely to win the presidential race?

In September, Allan Lichtman, a historian known for accurately predicting nine of the last ten presidential elections, chose Harris to be the next President of the United States, and his prediction still stands just days before Election Day.

On Tuesday, Lichtman repeated his prediction of a Harris victory on his YouTube channel, even though Harris' lead was shrinking in battleground states and the polls were close.

“Nothing has changed in my prediction that I made on September 5th,” Lichtman said, “contrary to the polls.”

When is Election Day 2024?

The general election will take place on Tuesday, November 5th.
