Will Democrats keep the Senate? Will Republicans retain control of the House of Representatives?

There are some important races to watch across the country in the 2024 election. A few key victories in select states could shift the power of party control in Congress. Here are the latest balance of power results:

2024 election campaign for the Senate

Democrats and Republicans are waging a war for control of the upper chamber. Democrats were on defense – Republicans only needed to win two new seats or a seat and the White House to regain control. Big victories in Ohio and Montana could determine control.

2024 election campaign for the House of Representatives

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for grabs in midterm and presidential elections each year.

Similar to the Senate, control over the will of the House was limited to a handful of close races. Before the election, Republicans only controlled the lower chamber with two seats.

It could be days before the election results are announced, experts warn.

Some states, such as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, cannot begin processing absentee and absentee ballots until Election Day.

The results of the 2020 election, won by President Joe Biden, took four days, while it took 35 days for George W. Bush to announce that he had won the White House in 2000.
