Will Ferrell's Netflix documentary teaches how to build friendships

It's just another chapter in your friendship and this film is all about friendship. Do you both have a new definition of friendship now or is it still the same, just with a stronger bond?

Harper Steele: I think we have a new definition – or at least I do. I think what I value most about friendship in general and what I started to understand a little bit better on this journey is friends who really take the time and listen to their friends. Those are the real friends and I have friends like that, I'm lucky to have friends like that. But I didn't really appreciate the work that goes into it. And I thought, “Oh yeah, I feel better knowing that. Maybe I'm a better friend now.” That was a learning experience for me.

As a writer and creator, so much of yourself goes into your work. Now that you're in a new phase of life, has your writing changed in any way? Do you imagine it has more depth now that you can be your true self? How has that affected your creative process?

Harper: Well, I've learned that there are areas of comedy that I want to stay away from out of respect for transgender people or queer people in general. That was developing long before I transitioned. And that's the thing, before I transitioned, a lot of myself, as far as my repressed feelings, was on paper and I used the paper to express them. So, I don't know, I haven't released anything major since my transition. So that's going to be fascinating for me.
